An index of the marriage records recorded in Burlington, Boone County, Kentucky from 1799-1870. The names of both brides and grooms are individually indexed.
The original records may be found at the Boone County Clerk's Office and on microfilm at the Boone County Public Library.
Marriages are recorded at Burlington, the county seat of Boone County, Kentucky in a series of books designated as A, B, C, D, etc. These are on the shelves in the County Clerk's office. The first marriages were recorded in 1799 soon after the county was formed. Marriage Bonds, permissions and other related papers are filed in boxes on shelves in the County Clerk's office. The books prior to 1870 are not indexed. For this reason a great deal of time has been required for searching through Marriage books for some particular record.
This index is prepared with the idea of facilitating research.
Names of brides and grooms have been listed individually with the page on which each is found in the marriage book. Each book has been indexed separately and a colored sheet of paper inserted between the books. This is an index and does not give any information except the location of each person's marriage record in the County Clerk's office. At the beginning of the index of each book there is a sheet of explanation and by studying this it will be possible, in most cases, to find the name of the person to whom each party listed in the index was married.
In the front of the index is a listing of the years from 1799 to 1870 showing the approximate page and book where marriages for that year are recorded. This gives an approximate year in which each person listed in the index was married. Complete data pertaining to any marriage may be secured by writing to the compilers of this index.
Marriage Book "A" covers the period from 1799 to 1835. A number of marriages are recorded on each page. Usually the date of license, date of marriage and name of minister or official performing the marriage are recorded. Some times one or more of these items may be missing. If, when looking through the index of Book "A" a name is found which may be the one sought, a comparison of the page number given with two page "Key" in the front of the book will give the approximate year of the marriage.
It will be difficult to pick out the person to whom an individual was married as from five to twelve marriages may be recorded on any one page, however, if the name of both individuals are known they may be found listed with the same page number.
The boxes containing Marriage Bonds, Marriage Licenses, Marriage Returns and permissions were examined and it was found that some marriages were never recorded in the book. These are listed in the index and reference is made to the box and not to the marriage book.
